Prominent projects that the Government of Uganda has completed, commissioned, or is currently undertaking
Karuma Hydropower Project (600MW)
Status: Completed & Fully Commissioned.
Overview: Uganda’s largest power-generation facility. NPA tracks this flagship due to its critical role in reducing industrial electricity tariffs and stabilizing the grid for economic transformation.
Expansion and Rehabilitation of the Transmission and Distribution Network
Status: Ongoing / Undertaking.
Overview: A nationwide initiative to build high-voltage grid extensions (like the Isimba-Kamuli line). It ensures that power generated by new plants actually reaches rural industrial hubs and minimizes transmission losses.
Kabaale (Kabalega) International Airport
Status: Completed / Final Delivery Phase.
Overview: Located in Hoima, this strategic airport was designed specifically to handle heavy cargo and machinery imports required for the development of the Albertine oil fields.
East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP)
Status: Active Undertaking.
Overview: The 1,443 km electrically heated pipeline running from Hoima to the Tanga port in Tanzania. It is heavily monitored at the national level to coordinate cross-border logistics, land acquisition, and environmental safeguards.
Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Uganda
Status: Active Undertaking.
Overview: A high-priority transport project designed to link Kampala to the Kenyan border at Malaba. It aims to cut cargo transit times from the coast from days to just hours.
Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) Rehabilitation
Status: Completed (Selected Sections) & Ongoing.
Overview: While SGR progresses, the government completed the overhaul of the Tororo-Gulu and Kampala-Malaba legacy lines to provide immediate, low-cost bulk freight options.
Kampala-Jinja Expressway (KJE)
Status: Undertaking / Early Works.
Overview: A critical public-private partnership (PPP) infrastructure project designed to alleviate severe traffic congestion along the primary import/export corridor connecting Uganda to East Africa’s northern corridor.
Hoima City Stadium (AFCON 2027)
Status: Active Undertaking.
Overview: A fast-tracked, deadline-driven sports infrastructure project built by international contractors to meet strict CAF specifications so Uganda can co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
